My visual language is inspired by early 1900s American tattoo imagery, pop culture, and DIY punk along with historical and modern-Mexican ceramic arts. I combine these inspirations by using simplified and bold line work, bright colors, and repeating symbols. Like early flash tattoo paintings, I am interested in creating and assigning meaning to symbols as they relate to my own experiences. As a third-generation Mexican American, I have a deep personal interest in learning about Mexican art and culture to connect pieces of my identity with the heritage that has gotten lost in service of American assimilation.
I am interested in exploring sculptural and functional ceramic forms that specifically lend themselves as canvases for the imagery applied to them. These pieces act as vehicles for me to work through my past, present, and future experiences.
