The Letter Lab

The Letter Lab offers a scientific twist on letter-writing curriculum through an interactive experience centered on written communication. Participants in The Letter Lab are invited to experiment by writing and sending a postcard, comparing the structure of a letter to an animal cell, and learning why handwriting personal notes still matters in a fast-paced digital world. By guiding viewers through the process of composing and sending a letter, my project highlights writing as both a creative and intentional act.

I created The Letter Lab after realizing how many people have stopped writing letters altogether. As a designer, I believe it is important to continue incorporating physical pen-and-paper experiences into modern design practices. Writing by hand encourages people to slow down, think more deliberately, and engage more deeply with their message in ways that typing often does not.

My interest in this topic is also personal. Growing up, my great-grandmother and I were pen pals, and checking the mailbox for her letters was one of my favorite daily rituals. That experience showed me how meaningful handwritten communication can be and how a simple note can create a lasting emotional connection.

Ultimately, The Letter Lab aims to create a space where people can rediscover the value of writing by hand. In a world driven by speed and convenience, my capstone invites viewers to pause, practice writing with intention, and experience the lasting impact of a handwritten message.
