I create paintings and drawings of still-lifes that contain objects I find personal, nostalgic, and symbolic. Using mediums like oil paint, graphite, and charcoal, I create compositions that give these objects value, beauty, and permanence.
The objects that I have collected over the years have come from three locations: my personal belongings, my childhood home, and thrift stores. Personal objects that I keep close to me have become a major part of my identity. For instance, I had an accident in September of 2021 in which I cut a tendon in my left hand. My physical therapist had created some splints to help me regain movement in my left thumb. Though I will always have this scar, I will never forget the people I met along the way. In a sense, I want to commemorate this whole experience. Objects from my childhood home bring up feelings of nostalgia. Whenever I look back on these objects, I remember all the fun times I had with my family and friends. Such objects include toys, hair products, and school awards. I hope viewers can also relate. And finally, objects that I collect from thrift stores. These secondhand objects pique my interest because of their history and whether or not they could have meant something to someone at some point in time. I like to arrange the objects into a composition that gives them hidden meanings and more value.
With my eye for realism and the stimulating need to always challenge myself in painting and drawing, I examine these objects on a personal and in-depth level, in hopes that viewers can see and recognize their significance and beauty, whether to me or to someone originally.
Bio
Nancy Nguyen is a graduating BFA student with an emphasis in drawing and a minor in business. She is from Lincoln, Nebraska. She has received many awards such as an honorable mention from the 2016 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and an entry fee award from the UNL 34th Annual Undergraduate Juried Exhibition. She has exhibited at the 34th and 35th Annual Undergraduate Juried Exhibitions (2021 and 2022). Nancy Nguyen paints and draws realistic still-lifes of various objects from different locations.
